Bold claim: even in the middle of a high-stakes live broadcast, a moment of vulnerability can become a defining moment for a top sports presenter. Laura Woods collapsed during ITV’s live England vs. Ghana coverage, and the moment sparked rapid concern, quick substitutions, and a cascade of public well-wishes.
Woods, 38, was anchoring the match from St Mary’s when she appeared to faint and was shortly supported by pundits Ian Wright and Anita Asante. The incident interrupted the broadcast, and Woods was replaced by Katie Shanahan, who announced that Woods had been taken ill but was in very good hands.
About an hour later, Woods’s fiancé, former Love Island contestant Adam Collard, provided an update on X: Laura is all OK and with the right people. Thank you for all your kind messages. This reassurance helped steady viewers during the unfolding event.
On air, the moment unfolded as Wright and Asante continued commentary. Wright, a former England striker, seemed to notice Woods’ fall and asked the studio, “Are you OK?” before ITV cut to a commercial break.
When the program returned, Shanahan had stepped in alongside Wright and Asante. She explained the late substitution: “As you have probably noticed we don’t have the wonderful Laura Woods because she’s just been taken ill, but she’s in very good hands, so I’m stepping in at late notice.”
Woods has established herself as one of the nation’s leading sports broadcasters. She led ITV’s coverage of the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the men’s Euro 2024, has overseen TNT Sports’ Champions League coverage, and previously hosted talkSPORT’s breakfast show from 2020–23. After a brief break following the birth of her first child with Collard in January, she returned to work in April.
Wright and Asante have a history of working with Woods. Wright, 62, is a familiar Lionesses pundit, while Asante, 40, has contributed to ITV, the BBC, and Disney+. Shanahan, a former England hockey player, serves as a presenter for ITV, talkSPORT, and Sky Sports, and typically handles pre- and post-match interviews for England Women games on ITV.
ITV has said they will comment further on the incident.
