Joaquin Niemann is gearing up to defend his title at the PIF Saudi International, but what's the secret to his success? It all boils down to rigorous practice and a calm approach during the tournaments, according to the man himself.
The final event of The International Series is set to kick off on Wednesday at the Riyadh Golf Club. Niemann, representing Torque GC, is aiming to make history by becoming the first player to win the tournament two years in a row. He's also eyeing his sixth individual title this season, having already clinched five wins on the LIV Golf League.
At just 27 years old, Niemann's approach to the game is remarkably mature. He revealed that he prefers to enter tournaments with minimal expectations, focusing instead on thorough preparation. He shared, "I feel like all I have to do is prepare myself the best I can during very good preparation weeks, so I can get to the tournament and just play golf."
Last year, Niemann secured his victory at Riyadh Golf Club with a stunning birdie on the second playoff hole, defeating Caleb Surratt and Cameron Smith. This win also earned him the overall Rankings title for the previous season's International Series.
But here's where it gets controversial... Niemann has made some significant changes to his team, which he believes have greatly contributed to his current form. He emphasizes the importance of a strong support system, stating he has "the best of the best on every aspect." He credits the consistency of his team's hard work for his success.
For the first two days of the tournament, Niemann will be paired with Dustin Johnson, the winner of this event in 2019 and 2021, and Tom McKibbin. The top two players from The International Series Rankings will also join them in the new season.
Currently, Scott Vincent from Zimbabwe leads the Rankings with 325.59 points, followed by Yosuke Asaji of Japan with 285.3 points, and Miguel Tabuena from the Philippines in third with 232.28 points. With the winner this week set to earn 324 points, the competition is fierce.
This $5 million tournament is also the third-to-last stop on the Asian Tour calendar, playing a crucial role in determining the Tour’s Order of Merit title. Kazuki Higa of Japan currently leads the Merit list, with Vincent in second and Tabuena in third.
