AI Revolution: Will Automation Slash Jobs in the UK? (2025)

AI Revolution: Buy It Direct CEO Predicts Massive Job Cuts

The CEO of a major UK online retailer, Buy It Direct, has made a bold prediction: the widespread adoption of automation and artificial intelligence (AI) will lead to a dramatic reduction in the company's workforce, cutting headcount by two-thirds within the next three years. This forecast comes as a stark warning for the future of employment in the UK.

Nick Glynne, CEO of Buy It Direct, which owns Appliances Direct, shared his concerns with BBC 5 Live's Wake Up To Money. He believes that the future job market for his business is "very bleak."

The company currently employs over 800 staff, but Mr. Glynne estimates that more than 500 jobs could be at risk. However, he emphasizes that this is not a set plan, as the situation is being accelerated by additional costs imposed by the government. HM Treasury has been contacted for comment.

Buy It Direct, based in Huddersfield, operates several online retail brands, including Furniture 123. The company also has a global presence, employing 150 staff overseas and running a customer service operation in the Philippines.

Mr. Glynne attributes the rapid shift to automation and AI to government decisions, such as the increase in the national living wage and national insurance contributions. He explains, "Our forecast is to have two-thirds less people, with the same revenue and activity; two-thirds less in the office and two-thirds less in the warehouse through automation."

The CEO highlights the use of AI in the office and technology involving robots, automation, and mechanization in the warehouse. This transformation means that the future of hiring UK workers is grim for companies like Buy It Direct. His comments reflect a growing concern about job losses, particularly entry-level positions, due to AI.

Graduates in fields like graphic design and computer science are already facing competition from technology for job roles. Amazon's recent announcement of 14,000 job cuts, citing the need for a leaner structure to embrace AI, further underscores the impact of automation on employment.

Additionally, Mr. Glynne mentions that higher taxes have led the company to outsource more senior roles, recruiting professionals outside the UK. He notes that this strategy has been successful, with accountants, managers, traders, buyers, and senior IT managers now working abroad. This shift is driven by the availability of cheaper labor in certain countries, where workers have less protection compared to the UK.
